Hi, this is Abeo, team captain for the 2018 Spoke’n Revolutions teen cycling tour, Bikes, Water & Soul!
We’re getting close to the start of the tour and I’m a little nervous to take on a bigger leadership role. 700 miles is a long way to ride a bike. I’m told it’s ok to be nervous even when It’s a bigger responsibility. Being nervous is only natural. Most of the people on the team will be doing this for the first time. They're gonna bike farther than they’ve ever biked before and be a long way from home.
I’m excited, too, though. I’m excited because we'll learn some incredible things. Things you won’t ever learn in school or read in textbooks. We'll learn about environmental justice, land and water conservation and specifically how we can improve life at home. To be better "stewards of the land" is the term. That’s the book stuff. What's really getting me excited are the things we don’t know we're gonna learn but I know we’ll learn anyway. We’ll be learning about ourselves. This will be the great gift that we’ll take away from this awesome experience. Experiences that we’ll use to shape who we are. Experiences that I’ll use to guide me in creating something that changes lives. To be the person that helps someone else who was once like me find their way.
This project has been made possible with a grant from Triangle Community Foundation's Environmental Conservation Awareness Program.
