Bikes are the first taste of freedom.
Triangle Bikeworks engages Black and ALAANA (African, Latine, Arab, Asian, Native American) youth in experiential learning that helps them overcome challenges, achieve audacious goals, and discover who they are — on and off the bike.
How it started
Founder Kevin Hicks came to believe bikes are a young person’s first introduction to freedom. In 2011, he ran a pilot with seven youth on donated mountain bikes — a 60-mile ride that became the seed of Spoke’n Revolutions, the organization’s flagship touring program.
Since then, riders have completed a dozen cross-country tours, each built around untold history and an environmental thread.
Programs are youth-led wherever possible: riders help facilitate group rides and lead reflective conversations on current and historical events.

Founder & Executive Director
Founder and Executive Director of Triangle Bikeworks, Kevin Hicks launched the organization in 2010 to empower youth of color through transformative cycling journeys. Guided by the belief that “bikes are your first introduction to freedom,” Kevin’s vision continues to inspire young people to discover strength, purpose, and possibility on every ride.
Ashley Scott
Program Manager, East Durham Cycling Center
Ashley Scott serves as the Program Manager at the East Durham Cycling Center, where he brings passion and purpose to empowering youth through cycling. With a strong belief in planning for the long ride — both on the road and in life — Ashley helps young people set goals, build resilience, and grow through every challenge.
